Dreaming of Being Busy

Any period of idleness longer than say… a day, makes me get an odd nervous twitch. My mind starts to wander and come up with strange things like how to most effectively weed the backyard that I never go into. Usually it involves some type of controlled pyrotechnics or liquid nitrogen, but such methods rarely are ever implemented into the real world. Besides, I don’t think the owners would find it quite as amusing.

Today, I woke up dreaming of my days back in undergrad when I was really busy (yes, these are comforting dreams). In addition to my classes, I had three jobs, was active in four organizations, and somehow found time to hit the gym. One of my jobs being a part of the University Technical Crew. We’d do things like set-up A/V for bands and speakers, run behind the scenes and coordinating events across campus, etc. I mean, it definitely had it’s perks…access to off-limit shortcuts across campus, free catering when they had leftover food, and basically letting you jump into any paid event on campus with a quick nod and smile to the your Tech Crew collegue running the show.

This one particular night, I recall a 7-hour gig where the only thing they needed was for the lights to fade off at the beginning, an lcd projecter, and the lights to fade on at the end. Its one of those events that are utterly foolproof with the possibility of something going wrong being close to nil. Plus, my supervisor was an attendee of this event, so if there were any problems on the ground, he said he could handle them. So, I was basically in the projector booth, making sure the 4 foot lcd cable didn’t magically unscrew itself from both the house A/V system and the projector. Unfortunately, you can’t really leave the event because something *might* go wrong, but there was pretty much nothing to do if you didn’t own a laptop. With my homework already done and exhaustion setting in, I remember walking out onto the auditorium catwalk and laying down on some chairs the crew had set up there. You can see and hear everything that’s going on, but no one can see you. And then I took a 5 hour nap.

I’m an extremely light sleeper, so I woke up during every long silence, but I remember feeling extremely refreshed at the end of the five hours. I faded on the lights, rolled up the projector cable, and clocked out. But now in retrospect of this very particular event, I wonder if I had snored. These are the things my mind worries about at night.
